Citizens Seek Martinsburg City Council Rejection of Draft

Martinsburg Zoning Ordinance Rewrite

On May 6, 2021 at 12:00 pm (Noon) and 6:30 pm the Martinsburg City Council will hold two Public Hearings at City Hall - 232 N. Queen St to take citizen comments on the draft Martinsburg Zoning Ordinance Rewrite.

This new zoning is going to dramatically change our City and because City Hall has been in lockdown due to COVID, there has been limited Citizen participation.

Overall, the Proposed MZO increases Business use in established residential areas and also converts many uses that are currently Not Permitted to either be allowed By Right or Special Exception. These changes reduce residents' ability to have any say in what happens in their neighborhood.

Additionally, the MZO promotes overcrowding in neighborhoods by allowing the subdivision of residential housing into smaller units, the creation of 300 square foot living units, and an unclear definition of room rentals with no limit to the number of rooms or occupants.

Finally, the MZO is confusing and contradicts itself.

A petition requesting the City Council Vote NO on the Zoning Rewrite has been started by a group of concerned citizens.  A copy of the petition and other background information is available at www.facebook/no2zonerewrite

Citizens interested in signing the petition can email a request to: no2mzorewrite@gmail.com.

Please attend the two Public Hearings on May 6, 2021 at 12:00 pm (Noon) and 6:30 pm in the Martinsburg City Council Chambers at City Hall - 232 N. Queen St.
